Capes: from superhero to super chic

By on 03:40

The cape has come a long way from its basis in fantasy; now the fashion world has fully embraced it, it’s not so much superhero as super chic. This year, this simple armless garment has been seen everywhere from the red carpet to the high street. Online fashion boutique NARCISS (http://www.shopnarciss.com) looks at the trend, and introduces it’s own exquisite take on the style.

While capes date back to medieval Europe, the 1970s were probably the last time in living memory that capes were considered the height of fashion. However, they tended to be more like ponchos, often knitted and seen more often in the school playground than on the catwalks. But any modern style aficionado will tell you, the cape is very much bang on-trend in 2012.

And not just the cape coat, either. Back in February this year, Hollywood A-lister Gwyneth Paltrow brought our collective attention to the cape dress, with the help of fashion A-lister Tom Ford, when she wore his ice cool, ultra sophisticated caped column dress on the Oscars red carpet. Tom Ford’s love affair with the cape continues, with one of the most recent red carpet events, the world premiere of the film version of Les Misérables, featuring Anne Hathaway rocking a gothic caped creation from Ford’s Spring/Summer 2013 collection.

It seems the cape will continue to be a sartorial hit next year, but for now, as we wrap up against the cold, the cape coat is a clear winner. It is just about the most stylish way to keep warm, given it’s in-the-know-nod to this über-trend, and also one of the most flattering. A cape skims the shoulders and follows the form without drowning it, and the fact that the arms are exposed make it the most slimming winter cover-up. What’s more, it creates yet more shopping and accessorising possibilities with the option of sexy yet practical long gloves.
Online fashion boutique NARCISS has all of the sought-after elements of the cape coat trend in one highly desirable piece: the Pawn Cape. The virgin wool and baby alpaca fabrics mix in off-white ticks the luxury box, making this garment as cozily warm as it is super-soft, while the glazed faux-leather details and bold black button provides high-end contrasting and beautiful attention to detail. The skimming shape and slim arm slits are incredibly flattering, while the perfectly placed pockets not only give great detail to the cape, but are practical for warming your hands while still showing a little wrist. Wear this stunning cape with cigarette pants or some of NARCISS’ gorgeous leggings and you’ll hit all the right proportions.
